Alanya

With its vast beaches, historic sites, the innumerable fish restaurants of its modern hotel and motels and its cafes and bars, Alanya, is an outstanding holiday getaway. The first thing that greets the visitor is the 13th century Selçuk Castle, which sits like a crown atop of Alanya Peninsula. Besides the impressive castle, there is the shipyard, which has no parallel in the world, and the fabulously beautiful Red Tower (Kızıl Kule). All along the road which runs beside the port are late night cafes and bars and boutiques selling handicrafts, leather clothing, jewelry, handbags and local gourds painted with extraordinary colors. If you like to explore caves, then you must see Damlataş Cave.

Near the cave is the Ethnographic Museum. By boat you can reach three other caves: the Phosphorous Cave with its phosphoric rocks, Girls Cave (Kızlar Cave), where pirates held their women prisoners, and Lovers Cave (Aşıklar Cave). Homer's description of Bodrum as "The land of eternal blue" and the words of another resident of Bodrum, Cevat Şakir, who said "The heavenly bliss of life in Bodrum is better than any eternal bliss that may await us" were not without foundation in reality. Throughout history Bodrum, known as Halikarnassos in ancient times, has always been fought over and people have been unwilling to share its beauty with others.

Built on a peninsula formed by the meeting of the eastern and western harbors, Bodrum, with its narrow streets winding down to the sea, is famous for its castle, its world-renowned yachts, its shipyards and the dazzling white houses and tombs lining the shores of its two harbors.

Çeşme is 94 km west of İzmir, on the very tip of the peninsula that bears its name. It was called the 'little harbor' by sailors, but with the passing of time, the area became known as Çeşme due to the ice-cold waters in its fountains, which is çeşme in Turkish. The colony of Erythrai, settled by the Ionians in the 10th century BC, is at Karaburun, east of the harbor at Çeşme and 15 km to the north. The regions archeological and historical remains consist of the ancient city of Erythrai, discovered in the village of Çeşme-Ildırı, and the Ottoman fortified inn at Kale Kervansaray, as well as numerous fountains and other examples of civil architecture from the ancient city.

Statuettes offered in the Temple of Athena Pallas were found during excavations in the Acropolis located on the top of a hill in the center of the city. One of the most important findings is the statue of a woman belonging to the Archaic Age. It is on display in the Izmir Museum of Archeology. There is an international music festival held here every year in July.

Göcek

The Gulf of Fethiye is thought by many sailors to be second only to the Indian Ocean in terms of the beautiful seascapes it offers. Until a few years ago the only land based option for those wanting to enjoy this magical corner of the world was the characterful, but hardly tranquil, town of Fethiye. However, in recent years a small amount of accommodation has become available in the pretty village of Gocek. Set at the deepest point of the gulf of Fethiye, Gocek nestles at the foot of the pine clad mountains looking out over the '12 islands' of the bay.

With a large natural harbour Gocek has grown up to cater to the needs of yachtmen. One of the pleasures of a visit here is a stroll around the Marina to admire the array of boats of all shapes and sizes moored here. The waterfront is lined with bars and restaurants. Inland life revolves around the pretty market square which is lined with little shops selling antiques and crafts as well as the more usual carpets.

In the daytime it is possible to swim from the small town beach, but you will probably prefer to take a trip to one of the beaches in the local nature reserves or a boat to one of the lovely islands in the bay. Thought this area is called the 12 islands there are, in fact, far more than that and you could easily explore a different one each day of your holiday. On some you will find a simple restaurant, on others fragments of classical or Byzantine ruins, on others nothing but glorious peace and quiet.

If you are tired of exploring the immidiate area Gocek is well sited for other parts of the coast. The bustling port of Fethiye, or the pretty town of Dalyan with its mud baths and the Carian city of Caunos can both be reached in under an hour. A little further afield you could visit the ancient sites of Letoon, Patara and Xanthos, or the spectaculargoge at Saklikent. An overnight trip to Ephesus and Pamukkale is also possible.

Gökova

Akyaka is one of the most beautiful villages you can sea on the Turkish Turquoise Coast situated right at the tip of magnificent Gokova Bay, on the road between Mugla and Marmaris. Make sure to stop over either to stay a few days, to experience the calm beauty of the pine forests and clean Mediterranean Sea or even a few hours to restaurants on the outskirts by the clear Azmak River, observing ducks and geese which live there year around. You won't regret it !

You can stay either in one of the small, family-run cozy apart hotels or in one of the more exclusive hotels.

Akyaka has one of the best picnic grounds surrounded by pine forests, by the sea where you can watch glorious sunsets, make your own barbecue or have a snack in the cafe.

Various modest tea-houses offer fresh tea, toasts and peaceful hours by the sea or in the town center. Fresh fish is best served here, all year round in all restaurants by the Azmak River.

Akyaka is also well known for the authentic architecture of Mugla area where Nail Cakirhan, the Turkish architect has his prize winning house. It is open to public as a cultural center during the high season.

You can easily enjoy drives or hikes to the nearby picturesque mountain or beach villages from Akyaka. Sakar and Sandras mountains are only half an hour away from Akyaka yours to discover !

Sedir Island, in the Gulf of Gokova, is the ancient Cedrai. Its old city walls, theater andtemples can be visited by driving from Akyaka, south to Gelibolu Bay and then crossing by boat. This voyage also offers an unforgettable panoramic view of the mountain scenery across the bay.

Kekova

A day trip to Kekova, Ucagiz and Kale could be the highlight of your stay in Lycia, the region of Turkey roughly between Fethiye and Antalya. Usually reached by boat from Kas or Kalkan, this little bit of the coast is full of surprises and history. Your typical trip will take in the sites of three ancient cities, Aperlae, Teimiussa and Simena (Kale). You really don't need to know anything about the history of the area to enjoy the trip but here's a little background anyway.

As you pass the little Greek island of Meis on your right your boat may take you into the bay that housed the harbor of Aperlae, founded by the Lycians and never a very important city . There's not a lot to see here but its fun to pass over the sunken remains of the harbour buildings.

The island of Kekova will probably be your next stop. As trade between the Lycians and the other Hellenistic Greeks increased so did piracy and many harbours and ports were fortified in the same way that Kekova is. Again you'll see the remains of buildings and walls beneath your boat, and, depending on the knowledge of your guide, various bits and pieces will be pointed out to you. You'll stop a couple of times for swimming and snorkelling, a couple of caveats for you here. You should watch out for the spiny sea urchins that hang out in the ruins and you should be aware that skin diving near the submerged buidlings is prohibited, as is the removal of any old looking stuff that you might find. You will regret it if you don't tyake a snorkel and mask with you but exercise a little restraint, your captain should know where its OK for you to dive.

As you move on to the mainland village of Kale (ancient Simena) you'll notice the unusual shapes of the islets and outcrops that you pass. These are the result of quarrying to the water line to provide stone for the buildings you've been looking at all day. The approach to Kale is delightful. The medieval castle sitting high on the hill is surrounded by the remains of the ancient city and the climb to the summit, through the little village where you'll probably have lunch, is worth it just to sit in the little theatre and gaze out over the bay to Kekova. The odd Lycian ogival tomb lying around reminds of where you are, you'll see them throughout this part of Turkey, and the village itself is charming in the way that it is built in to the remains of what was here before. Don't forget to check out the other side of the castle with its view to Ucagiz, where you'll probably go next.

The 'three mouths' of Ucagiz are the two openings east and west of Kekova island and the channel to the village itself. Ucagiz is accessible by road from the main Kas - Kalkan highway and is therefore a little more developed although its still fairly sleepy and laid back. There are pansiyons and restaurants here and you could plan to stay a couple of days to take in the delights of the area more fully.
